How to set up 2 Factor Authentication for COMET

Modified on Thu, 11 Sep at 9:33 AM

The following guide explains how to set up 2 Factor Authentication for your COMET account.

Preparation

You will first need to download one of 3 Authenticator apps in order to set this up. We highly recommend Microsoft Authenticator, but if you can't download this, then either of the other two will do.

1. Microsoft Authenticator

2. Google Authenticator

3. Free OTP

Logging in

When you attempt to login to COMET after June 16th 2025, you will be met with the following page.

(Do not scan the exact QR code in the example image below - you will have your own unique QR code).

You will then need to open the Authenticator app and scan the QR code (do not scan the exact one in the example image above - you will have your own unique QR code). Please note, you cannot just use your phone camera for this, you must do this through the authenticator app.

This will then provide you with a one-time code.

You can then use this one-time code and input it. Ignore the device name, then press login.

You should then be able to login to COMET.

Future Logins

If you log out (or get timed out) of COMET, you will be required to input a new OTP. These are generated on the app every 30 seconds, so you will need to ensure this is accurate when inputting to COMET. Please ensure to use the same device and app to ensure there are no issues.

What to do if the code if invalid

If when you put the code in, it refreshes the page or shows as invalid, you will need to start the process again. We would recommend removing all of the codes in your authenticator apps at this point and starting again. This is because they will no longer be valid.

Once you have done this, scan the code on your mobile phone. Ideally, you should have a device such as laptop/tablet to login to COMET on, and then a mobile phone used to scan the code.

Once you have scanned the code, it should give a 6 digit code. Please ignore the first code that comes up as this changes every 30 seconds. Once the code refreshes, type that code into COMET. Please note, if you take longer than 30 seconds from this point, the code will not work.

You can ignore the device name, and just press submit/login on COMET. This should then work.

We would recommend using Google Chrome where possible on your devices as we have found issues when using other browsers such as safari.

New Phone

If you get a new phone, or your authenticator app gets lost/deleted, we will need to reset your account. In order to do this, please raise a ticket with your COMET username, and we will reset this for you.
